Separate the labeled size, seller chart, item-specific measurement, reference-item measurement and your preferred fit or capacity.
Normalize units, record the measurement points and preserve reasonable uncertainty. A one-number match is not a complete fit decision.
Separate five things people call “size”
- Label: the printed or selected size name.
- Chart: a seller-provided guide, often for a product family rather than one item.
- Measured item: the dimensions visible in item-specific photos or notes.
- Reference item: a garment, shoe or bag you already understand.
- Preference: the ease, toe room, carry capacity or silhouette you want.
Normalize before comparing
Convert everything to one unit, but keep the original value beside the conversion. Record whether a width is measured flat or around the body, whether a shoe number refers to foot or internal length, and whether bag dimensions include handles or external pockets.
Practical rule: a converted number without a measurement method is still incomplete.
Clothing: compare a reference garment
Lay a comfortable reference garment flat and record the same points used by the source: chest width, shoulder, length and sleeve where relevant. Double a flat width only when the chart clearly describes circumference. Compare fabric stretch, cut and desired ease separately.
Footwear: internal length is not foot length
Foot length, insole length and internal shoe length are different measurements. Note whether the insole is removable, whether the toe shape reduces usable space and which sock thickness or fit preference applies. A familiar label in another brand is context, not a conversion rule.
Bags and accessories: outside size may overstate usable space
Exterior dimensions can include thick walls, curved corners or decorative parts. Record opening width, internal dividers, strap range and the dimensions of the object that must fit. For watches and accessories, distinguish case, face, band and total length.
Treat small differences honestly
Manual measurements, camera perspective and soft materials introduce variation. Use a range when the evidence supports only a range. If a two-centimeter difference would change the decision, ask for the exact measurement method instead of averaging conflicting numbers.
Worked example: two size charts for one shirt
Chart A lists size L with a 112 cm chest and 72 cm length. Chart B lists L with a 56 cm chest and 73 cm length. The first may describe circumference while the second may describe flat width, which would also equal 112 cm when doubled. The values look contradictory until the measurement method is named.
Your reference shirt measures 57 cm flat across the same chest points and 71 cm from the shoulder to hem. That makes both charts plausible for width, while length differs by one to two centimeters. Record the original numbers, the inferred relationship and the unresolved method. Do not rewrite both charts as a single “L = 112 cm” rule.

The decision can remain “comparable with one clarification.” That is more accurate than choosing a different labeled size simply because two charts use different formats.
Repeat the comparison for every measurement that affects the intended fit. A close chest value cannot compensate for a shoulder, sleeve or length that falls outside the acceptable range. Record which dimension is decisive for you.
